Jing’an Villas is a complex of new-style Shanghainese residential buildings, invested and constructed by developer Zhang Tanru in 1932.
This location was once the base of the Chaozhou Guildhall and included stables, serving as a horse-raising place for the British, and was also home to notable figures such as Cai Yuanpei, Kong Xiangxi, and Yu Youren.

Apart from one building classified as a general historical building, the rest are all protected historical structures.

This area can be considered a microcosm of Shanghai’s residential architecture, with a certain level of representativeness.

Now, it retains 183 houses. After decades of changes, the area has long lost its former splendor.

On the first floor of each household, there is a ten-square-meter courtyard. When looking up at the sky, one can still see well-preserved wall reliefs, Western-style small balconies, and black cast-iron window lattices.

The spacious public spaces between the buildings are lush with greenery, making them ideal settings for cafes, galleries, and other lifestyle venues.

Coffee, milk tea, and small wonton soup allow visitors to savor the flavors while experiencing the ambiance of old Shanghai.

The area is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
