The Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal is one of the oldest parts of the canal. The ancient canal in Yangzhou has clear waters flowing through the city, with numerous historical sites along its banks and unique, interesting local customs. Starting from the Yangtze River entrance, visitors can find the ancient ferry of Guzhou; one of the four famous temples in China, Gaomin Temple; the Tang Dynasty’s maritime Silk Road ferry, Yangzijin; the dock where Jianzhen set sail for Japan, Baotabay; the religious site Puhading Tomb; and the watershed between the old and new canals, Zhuyuwan. Further north along the waterway, one can visit the ancient post station Gaoyou and the lotus root hometown Baoying. Yangzhou is one of the world’s earliest canals and is a ‘canal city’ in China that is as old as the ancient canal. During the Tang Dynasty, the shipping on the north-south Grand Canal flourished, making Yangzhou a hub for merchants from all directions. For a time, ‘Guangling was a place of music and bells, with wealthy merchants in the hundreds’. Jianzhen’s journey to Japan started from Yangzhou. Between 1684 and 1784, Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong visited the south six times, passing through Yangzhou and staying there on multiple occasions. Historically, without the ancient canal, there would be no ancient city of Yangzhou; the rise and fall of the ancient canal is the rise and fall of the ancient city of Yangzhou. The ancient canal has nurtured the city of Yangzhou, connected its lakes and rivers, expanded its territory, and laid the foundation for its culture. The ancient canal has become an integral part of Yangzhou’s culture. The canal has nurtured Yangzhou and is the ‘root’ of the city. As a ‘canal city’, Yangzhou should vigorously develop and utilize the canal cultural resources in the new century, allowing the ancient canal culture to contribute significantly to Yangzhou’s economic development and social progress through tourism. The canal is open all year round, 24 hours a day. The specific opening hours are subject to the notice at the scenic spot site.
