Jinshan Mouth Fishing Village is one of the earliest fishing villages along the coastal land of Shanghai, located by the Hangzhou Bay, to the north of the Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway, and just a stone’s throw away from the sea, facing the Jinshan Three Islands across the water.
A variety of delicious seafood delicacies is a major feature of the fishing village. The seafood food street and fishing home inn snacks each have their own characteristics, attracting an increasing number of tourists. Jinshan Mouth is a famous fishing port in the Shanghai area, with a historically prosperous marine fishery. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the town had 36 shops and workshops, with more than 10 fishery inns operating in fish trade alone: during the spring and autumn seasons, when large fish and jellyfish were abundant, visitors and merchants gathered to watch the tides, buy fish, and conduct business, making the sea embankment bustling with people. In the 1980s, Jinshan Mouth Fishing Village reached its peak, with more than 1,000 fishermen going out to sea, owning 45 large and small fishing boats with a tonnage of 1,650 tons, and an annual fishery output of 1.16 million dan. The fishing range also expanded from Hangzhou Bay to the distant ocean, as far south as the Diaoyu Islands and as far north as Jeju Island in South Korea, making it a red flag in the fishing industry of Shanghai. However, since the late 1980s, with the construction of many chemical enterprises, a large amount of wastewater flowed into Hangzhou Bay, leading to the gradual depletion of fishery resources, resulting in the situation where fishing boats were stranded on the beach and fishermen came ashore. Most fishermen bid farewell to the sea they relied on for survival, some went to work, some did business, and some, who couldn’t forget the sea, continued to fish near the coast while starting aquaculture and fish processing businesses on land. Some fishermen, taking advantage of the unique natural conditions, opened dozens of seafood hotels on the side of the Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway, forming a distinctive seafood street. The old street of Jinshan Mouth has been renovated and now houses a fishing village museum, a fishing gear development exhibition, artist studios, and fishing home inns, all of which are characteristic of maritime culture. Together with Jinshan Mouth Seafood City and the seafood street, they serve as a tourist attraction on the golden coast of Jinshan, giving the ancient fishing village a new vitality.
