Jiuhua Zen Temple, formerly known as Sun’s Hermitage, also named Jingguan Zen Yard, is located at No. 28 Xiaojiuhua Road, west of Dongpo Park, Yanling East Road, Changzhou City, covering an area of 3 acres with a construction area of 3500 square meters.

Originally built in the 18th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1590), it was a family temple built by Sun Shen, the Minister of Rites, for his sister, Jingxiu, hence the name Sun’s Hermitage. It was originally located in the southern part of the city, in Nanyuan, and was destroyed by war during the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty.

In September 1980, it was approved as a temple open to the public. In 1984, Chuan Yi returned to the temple as the abbot and rebuilt the Guanyin Hall into the main hall, restored the mountain gate, reshaped the Buddha statues, and carried out normal Buddhist activities. Tianning Zen Temple successively donated three jade Buddha statues of Guanyin.

After Chuan Yi’s passing in 1987, De Hua succeeded as the abbot, and after De Hua’s passing, Kuan Jing, the abbot of Wuzhuo An in Guangzhou, took over the responsibility. Due to the lack of development space around the original site, the Jingguan Zen Yard was relocated to the former site of Xiaojiuhua Temple with the approval of the municipal government in April 2000.

In November 2001, the foundation ceremony of Jiuhua Zen Temple was held, and after more than a year of construction, new structures such as the mountain gate, Mahavira Hall, Samadhi Hall, Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion, Guanyin Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, guest hall, refectory, Dharma lecture hall, and Ganlu vegetarian restaurant were built.

The temple, with a Buddhist hall as the main quadrangle, features an ancient architectural style, and was completed in June 2003. In May 2003, it was renamed Jiuhua Zen Temple. The opening hours and business status are subject to the actual opening conditions on the day.
