Jiuli Mountain’s peaks take on shapes resembling various objects, from west to east they are known as Elephant Mountain, Baofeng Mountain, and so on. The foothills include Dagushan, Xiaogushan, Sha’gushan, Hu Mountain, Turtle Mountain, Kanhua Mountain, Yangjia Mountain, Jiangjia Mountain, and Pipa Mountain. Since ancient times, Xuzhou has been a strategic location for military contention. According to historical records, from the 18th year of Duke Cheng of Lu during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period (573 BC) to the establishment of the nation in 1949, there have been more than 400 significant battles in the Xuzhou area. Jiuli Mountain was the site of the fierce Chu-Han contention, and it is where Xiang Yu met his downfall at the White Cloud Cave. Subsequently, figures such as Zhu Quanzhong and Shi Pu from the Tang Dynasty, and Zhu Di and Zhu Yunwen from the Ming Dynasty, all fought fierce battles at Jiuli Mountain. The classic novel ‘Water Margin’, in its fourth chapter, includes a poem that reads: ‘Before Jiuli Mountain, an ancient battlefield, where shepherd boys pick up old swords and spears,’ which is an appropriate depiction of this place. The site is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
