Jiuzi Rock Scenic Area is located south of Qingyang County in Chizhou City, approximately 9 kilometers from the county town. It is part of the rear mountain range of Jiuhua, with the main peak, Tianhua Peak, reaching an elevation of 1084 meters. It is said that the new prince of the Silla Kingdom (Korea), Kim Qiaojue, who is believed to be the incarnation of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, chose Jiuzi Rock as his first place of practice upon arriving at Mount Jiuhua. However, Jiuzi Rock and Mount Jiuhua are not the same scenic area; their entrances are quite far apart. Jiuzi Rock is not crowded and is home to several temples, providing a tranquil environment. The natural scenery is characterized by peculiar peaks and strange rocks, and there are waterfalls to view as well. At the foot of Jiuzi Rock, you can visit the Shuangxi Temple, and not far from the Mahavira Hall is the Daxing Flesh Body Hall, where you can see the flesh body of Daxing monk, the first of its kind since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. You can choose to hike up the mountain or take a cable car; the cable car ride up costs 45 yuan, down 35 yuan, and a round trip is 80 yuan. If you choose to hike, head towards the Qibuyuan Waterfall, a spectacular waterfall within the scenic area, and then pass through the 800-year-old Liugongzhai Fortress to reach Jiuzi Temple. Along the way from the foot of the mountain to Jiuzi Temple, you will encounter several small temples and cliff inscriptions. Jiuzi Temple, not far from the cable car station, is also known as Huayan Zen Temple and Guanghua Court, with a Ming Dynasty stele embedded in the left side of the Mahavira Hall’s entrance. Climbing to the higher Tianhua Peak from Jiuzi Temple takes about 2 hours, and along the way, you will see peculiar peaks and strange rocks that resemble human and animal forms, allowing you to use your imagination. After visiting Tianhua Peak, you can descend and return. Several temples within the Jiuzi Rock Scenic Area offer vegetarian meals; ask the temple monks for the specific location to dine.
