Kailai Teahouse is an old and famous teahouse in Mudu. It is located at the east end of Shantang Street, the main street of Mudu Ancient Town, beside Caijia Bridge. Walking along the banks of the Xiangxi River, before reaching the ancient Shantang Street, one can hear the music of pipa and sanxian accompanied by the melodious Pingtan ditties wafting from an antique two-story Chinese-style building.
The music lingers, and the Wu charm is long, making people can’t help but stop. “Kailai Teahouse” was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Its original name was “Laikai Teahouse”, taking the meaning of “guest” in Suzhou dialect. When Emperor Qianlong came to Mudu for the fifth time on his southern tour and had tea at the teahouse, he renamed “Laikai Teahouse” to “Kailai Teahouse”. The teahouse name has been in use since then. Kailai Teahouse is a brand under Suzhou Lanya Kunqu Opera Art Troupe. It mainly operates tea room private boxes, Kunqu and Pingtan performances, traditional culture research and learning experiences, and private customized high-end reception activities. The teahouse combines Suzhou life and cultural elements and restores every detail of ancient Suzhou characteristic culture, presenting the slow-paced lifestyle of Suzhou literati to tourists. The elegant furnishings in the store, the floating fragrance of calligraphy and paintings, the fragrance of tea, the music of “big and small pearls falling on a jade plate”, and the soft and gentle Wu dialect ditties make tourists entering the teahouse relax instantly and feel that all troubles and burdens are relieved. With fragrant tea, melodious music, and a sincere heart to welcome guests, Kailai Teahouse welcomes tourists and refined scholars from home and abroad and invites you to experience an unforgettable Suzhou-style cultural feast. The specific business hours and status are subject to the opening situation on that day.Kailai Teahouse & Mudu Pingtan and Kunqu Opera Hall
