Kaiyuan Temple was built in 1930. It was funded by Mr. Rong Desheng and built through donations negotiated by Monk Liangru. It is a very famous temple in Wuxi and is known as Wuxi’s ‘Little Lingyin’. Kaiyuan Temple has three treasures: a bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha from Thailand, a Japanese Buddhist bell, and a portrait of Buddha and Bodhisattva from the United States. In 1989, Kaiyuan Temple had a jade Buddha that was 3 meters long and weighed 6 tons. For this reason, a jade Buddha building was specially constructed. Kaiyuan Temple has long had the custom of listening to the bell. On the eve of every New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, many Chinese and foreign tourist groups come to Kaiyuan Temple in Meiyuan to hold activities of listening to the bell and welcoming the New Year.
