Kaolaoshan is located at the southern end of Shanglin Lake in Cixi, Zhejiang, with a high elevation and lush green trees shading the mountain. The streams within the mountain echo with the roaring sounds of waterfalls. Every aspect of Kaolaoshan, from its mountains and waters to its stones and trees, is a masterpiece of nature, devoid of any artificial marks, just as its name suggests, primitive and simple. The mountain is divided into two peaks, east and west, often enveloped in a perennial mist. Between these peaks lies a valley, at the bottom of which the stream flows rapidly, known as Kaolaoxi. On the Waterfall Ridge within the mountain, there are many wild mountain teas. Around the time of Qingming each year, the young buds emit a fragrant aroma. The ancient and famous ‘Xianming Tea’ originates from this area. In the ‘Tea Classic’ by Tang Dynasty’s Lu Yu, it is mentioned that ‘Yuezhou, Mingzhou, and Taizhou all produce tea, with Yuezhou’s production considered the best.’ Lu Yu also stated: ‘In Yuyao County, on the Waterfall Spring Ridge, there is a tea called Xianming.’ According to the ‘Yuyao Liucang Records’: ‘Waterfall Ridge is in Kaolaoxi,’ confirming the well-deserved reputation of ‘Xianming.’ Sampling the ‘Xianming Pearl Tea,’ each pearl is round, firm, and with a hint of white downy hair. When brewed, the aroma fills the room; taking a sip, one experiences a refreshing and invigorating sensation, truly ‘fragrant as the orchid’s scent, round like jade pearls rolling on a plate.’ The peculiar peaks and dangerous ridges of Kaolaoshan, along with the clear and pure lake water of Shanglin, make it an ideal place for cultivating one’s body and spirit. Open all year round from 09:00 to 16:00.
