Keqiao Ancient Town is a major town in Shaoxing County and one of the famous water towns in Zhejiang. Known for its economic prosperity, abundant resources, and thriving markets, it is beautifully nicknamed ‘Golden Keqiao’. With a long history and rich cultural heritage, it has been recognized as one of the first ‘Historical and Cultural Towns’ and ‘Tourist Towns’ in Zhejiang. As recorded in Zhang Yuantan’s ‘Three Rivers Examination’, there is a Keqiao 30 miles away from Shanyin, with Ke River beneath it. The Ke River flows through the town’s streets and rivers, and the town was named after the bridge, which in turn was named after the water. In the 1970s, a stone axe was unearthed in Dushu Village, proving human activity here as early as the Neolithic Age. ‘Yue Jue Shu’ also records that King Goujian of Yue lived in Dushu, later moving to Langya, where his tomb was incomplete. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai Yi created the world-famous ‘Keqiao Flute’ here, hence Keqiao is also known as ‘Flute Town’. It experienced the Tang and Song dynasties, becoming a bustling market upon the ‘opening of the market’ in the Ming Dynasty. When Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty toured the south, he visited Keqiao and erected a ‘Release Fish Imperial Stele’ in the Fangsheng Temple next to Ke Pavilion in the east of the town. Keqiao is a famous town in the south of the Yangtze River with a history of over 1700 years, always a hub for merchants and trade, rich in products, and has the reputation of ‘Golden Keqiao’, being a typical land of fish and rice. Keqiao is an economically strong town with substantial economic strength and well-developed infrastructure, recognized as one of ‘China’s Top 100 Towns’, ‘China’s Star Towns’, and ‘National Demonstration Towns for Small Town Construction’. Keqiao is a commercial hub with one of the largest textile distribution centers in the country – China Textile City, and its supporting markets for clothing, spinning machines, and grocery products, radiating to surrounding areas and even abroad. Keqiao is a major tourist town with national and provincial key cultural relics protection sites such as the ancient towpath, Taiping Bridge, and the provincial Ke Yan Scenic Area. It is a famous water town and bridge town, with black felt hats, black awning boats, towpaths, stone bridges, long corridors, and Ming and Qing ancient architectural complexes, forming a unique picture of the ancient Yue water town. Keqiao, also known as ‘Flute Town’, is said to have been named after the Eastern Han Dynasty’s great literary figure Cai Yong, who passed through this place and made a flute from the bamboo rafters of Ke Pavilion. During the Three Kingdoms period, it began as a grass market, became a post station in the Song Dynasty, a major town in Eastern Zhejiang in the Ming Dynasty, and established an inspection office in the Qing Dynasty. In the second year of Xuantong’s reign, the town was established and named Ke Town. Since 1954, it has been a county-affiliated town.
