Kuaiji Mountain Doushuai Tian Scenic Area

Kuaiji Mountain Doushuai Tian Scenic Area is located in Lingxia Village, Hutang Street, southwest of Keqiao District, Shaoxing. The scenic area covers an area of 4.3 square kilometers, bounded by Xianglin Village to the east, Lingxia Village to the south, Lianzen Village to the west, and Yanshang Reservoir to the north. It features lush mountains, beautiful scenery, a warm winter and cool summer, with fragrances that last through all seasons, and a spectacular thousand-year-old osmanthus forest that stretches for miles.

Hidden deep within the Baolin Mountains, ancient temple complexes echo with the sounds of Buddhist chants and the peal of bells and drums. Many historical celebrities have visited this place, leaving behind numerous poetic works, such as Tang Dynasty poet He Zhizhang, Southern Song Dynasty poet Lu You, Ming Dynasty scholar Zhang Dai, and modern Buddhist Nan Huaijin. The scenic area, with its unique ancient osmanthus forest and natural landscapes, has become an ecological tourism destination integrating religion, folklore, leisure, and vacation.

The area is divided from bottom to top into three realms: Da Xianglin, Longhua Temple, and Doushuai Tian Palace. The first realm, Da Xianglin, offers cherry blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer, osmanthus in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter, with continuous fragrances throughout the year and fresh, pleasant air. The highlight is the world-famous thousand-year-old osmanthus forest, which spans several miles and remains evergreen, with its fragrance spreading far and wide.

The second realm, Longhua Temple, is built against the mountains, with layers of carved beams and painted rafters, exuding grandeur. The complex of Jiangnan residential-style buildings with white walls and black tiles perfectly matches the red-walled and glazed tile Buddhist worship hall complex, offering a scene at every step, showcasing the architectural model of Buddhist temples in the 21st century.

The third realm, Doushuai Tian Palace, is separated from Longhua Temple by a river and is planned according to the three scriptures of Maitreya. It consists of seven treasure walls, Doushuai Tian inner court, and a purple gold lotus. The seven treasure walls are carved with images of heavenly arhats, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, stretching over 4000 meters, a work of divine craftsmanship. The Doushuai Tian inner court houses an indoor seated Buddha – a 33-meter-high Maitreya with a heavenly crown, which is awe-inspiring.

The purple gold lotus on top of the palace has a diameter of 56.7 meters. On the lotus, there is a formless great Buddha, and the size of the Buddha is as big as the heart of the worshipper, which fits the meaning of the Diamond Sutra: ‘One cannot see the Tathagata by physical appearance.’ At night, the Doushuai Tian Palace is ethereal and dreamlike, with colorful changing lights, as if one has entered a fantasy of the heavenly palace, recreating the charming scene of ‘infinite light on the lotus’ from Buddhist scriptures.
