Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Theatre is located in Kunshan, China, the birthplace of Kunqu Opera, known as the ‘ancestor of a hundred operas’. It was officially established on October 12, 2015. The troupe has an administrative office, a performing arts center, a theater operation center, and a Kunqu culture center. Since its establishment, it has recruited many talented people and assembled an elite team of more than 60 Kunqu talents.
It holds more than 200 performances, lectures, and exchange activities every year, fulfilling the inheritance and promotion of Kunqu art. The troupe is based on traditional essence and follows contemporary aesthetics. It successfully held the large-scale event ‘Kunqu Returns Home: Master Inheritance Version of The Peony Pavilion’, which attracted domestic and international attention. In terms of repertoire creation: It adapted the classic ‘Wutong Rain’ and activated the 700-year silent precious relic of Yuan zaju with Kunqu. The original Kunqu opera ‘Gu Yanwu’ combines Kunshan’s ‘golden business card’ to promote culture and pay tribute to predecessors. In terms of repertoire inheritance: It inherits classic grand operas such as the selected version of ‘The Peony Pavilion’ and the southern Kunqu inheritance version of ‘The Peach Blossom Fan’, as well as Kunqu excerpts, and vigorously inherits cultural context and cultivates talents. The troupe carefully operates professional performance exhibition and interactive experience venues such as Kunqu theaters and Kunqu culture centers, and strives to create a highland for Kunqu culture appreciation. Over the years, it has successfully created brand promotion activities such as ‘Kunqu Returns Home’, ‘Kunqu Entering Four Places’, and ‘Kunqu Summer Camp’, and is committed to creating a good atmosphere for art appreciation. At the same time, the troupe is based in its hometown, active in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, goes to the whole country, and expands overseas.
