The key to the meal’s deliciousness lies in the quality of the rice, the taste of the beer, and the perfect combination of temperature and ice, creating a refreshing sensation that is closely linked to the comfortable climate.
Riverside Leisure and Restrictions
After dining, we strolled leisurely by the river, tossing small pebbles into the water and creating splashes. The Mekong River at this section is not wide, and a good swimmer could easily cross it. However, it is strictly prohibited now, as crossing would be considered smuggling.
Our guide shared that tourists used to enjoy releasing sky lanterns by the Mekong River, but this practice is no longer allowed due to the potential infringement caused by the lanterns drifting across the border.
Sala Kaew Ku: The Story and Art of a Sculptor
Sala Kaew Ku, one of the Seven Wonders of Thailand, is a must-visit attraction in Nong Khai province, known for its poignant story. Completed in 1978 after over two decades of construction, the site features over 200 statues, all created by a single sculptor from Nong Khai.
The sculptor, originally from Laos, had over 300 statues in his home country’s Xieng Khuan Temple, but due to political disagreements, he was imprisoned. After his relatives rescued him from jail and he returned to Nong Khai, which had become part of Thailand, he was unable to see his works in Xieng Khuan Temple. Overwhelmed with grief, he was given a piece of land to build a temple similar to Xieng Khuan, reigniting his dreams. He began construction in 1978, dedicating over 20 years and an immense amount of resources to create the site as it stands today. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 72 while sculpting the 200th Buddha statue. The temple was subsequently named in his honor.
The Sculpture Park and Its Impact
Upon entering the sculpture park, one is immediately struck by the seven giant serpents shielding the meditating Buddha from the elements, a testament to the creator’s imagination. The ancient Brahmin temple houses over 200 statues of various sizes, each with distinct expressions, meticulously crafted and vividly expressive. Each statue carries a moving legend and story, and I plan to write this travelogue in installments due to the abundance of stories I’ve heard.
