UD TOWN Night Market Experience
We absolutely loved this night market foraging trip. After the day’s activities, we returned to Brown House Hotel for a rest before setting out together to UD town as night fell. Tonight’s dinner was at our own expense.
On the way to the night market, we exchanged Thai baht with the guide, 120 RMB for 5000 baht. The guide didn’t have change, so we exchanged 240 RMB for 10,000 baht with two people. The result was that I couldn’t spend my money in the night market because the bills were too large and the vendors couldn’t give change. Later, we went to Tesco supermarket first to buy some snacks to break the bills before returning to the night market to buy food.
Having visited Thailand several times, my impression is that there are many supermarkets, convenience stores, and night stalls. During the day when the tour bus travels through the city, it feels like there are very few people. However, at night when we arrive at the night market, we find that there are many people! Large supermarkets in Thailand are very comfortable to visit, usually occupying an entire building, unlike some of our supermarkets that might be in basements. There are also many individual small shops around the supermarket.
In the evening, we noticed that local Thai banks were open for business, but the Japanese-owned Citibank had already closed. At this Tesco supermarket, we didn’t find anything of interest, feeling that it was less attractive than 7-11 to us. Moreover, we were hungry and found that there was no cooked food section. We bought some small packaged snacks and quickly left…
The night market is really large, with several areas. The open-air area is basically for juices and grilled skewers. I highly recommend the freshly squeezed juices, such as avocado milk for 40 baht, which is equivalent to 10 RMB, a large cup with a rich and pure taste! It was in the open-air area where I encountered a polite refusal from everyone after showing my 10,000 baht because the items here are really cheap, all in the tens of baht.
