Maoshan is renowned for its Taoist traditions. In 1998, Jurong City erected a statue of the Taoist progenitor, the Supreme Old Lord (Tai Shang Lao Jun), at the Daoist Ancestor Square in Yuanfu Wan Ning Palace on Maoshan. The statue stands at a height of 33 meters and weighs 106 tons, making it one of the tallest Taoist statues in the world and it has been listed in the Guinness World Records.

The Laozi statue exudes a dignified and benevolent presence, with ears that reach the shoulders, a beautiful beard brushing the chest, holding a Tai Chi fan in the right hand, and the left hand raised to the chest, with a gaze filled with wisdom. The statue’s demeanor seems to be gently expounding the profound truths of his timeless work, the ‘Tao Te Ching’.

Shortly after the completion of the Laozi statue, a group of spirited wasps arrived and built a windproof and rainproof nest in the palm of the statue’s left hand. Interestingly, the wasp nest has grown with the wind and now measures about one meter in length and thirty to forty centimeters in width. People jokingly say that this scene symbolizes the ‘flocking’ of guests from around the world, representing the flourishing of Maoshan.

Behind the Laozi statue, there is a hundred-meter cultural corridor built along the mountain wall. It vividly explains the connotations of Taoist culture through the artistic forms of colored paintings, stone carvings, murals, and wood carvings, and illustrates Laozi’s profound philosophical thoughts with both images and text. The statue is open all year round from 07:30 to 17:00, included in the Maoshan scenic area which opens from 08:00 to 17:00. For specific opening times of the attractions, please refer to the public notices at the scenic area.
