The Lengqia Pagoda Courtyard is located on the top of Shangfang Mountain. The Lengqia Pagoda is also known as the Shangfang Pagoda. The Lengqia Pagoda was built in the fourth year of Daye in the Sui Dynasty (608 AD). Li Xian, the doctor of silver青光禄 and the prefect of Wu County, built a seven-story pagoda on the top of Lengqia Mountain because ‘trees can be used for nothing more than building pagodas.
The importance of promoting blessings is no more than building stupas.’ ‘Nine relics are placed inside, with jade bottles outside and stone coffins surrounding and protecting them. They are left to be immortal and will not be burned by the fire of calamity. They are guarded and will not be easily moved or changed by the flood of calamity.’ At the time when the pagoda was built, there was already the Lengqia Temple at the foot of the mountain, which is today’s Zhiping Temple. At that time, it was named Lengqia Temple. Because the pagoda and the pagoda courtyard are built on the top of the mountain, it is called ‘Shangfang Temple’. Later, the mountain is named ‘Shangfang Mountain’ after the temple. The pagoda built in the Sui Dynasty should be made of wood. In the fifth year of Huichang in the Tang Dynasty (845 AD), the temple and pagoda were destroyed in the movement of Emperor Wuzong Li Yan to suppress Buddhism. It was rebuilt in the third year of Taiping Xingguo in the Northern Song Dynasty (978 AD). Opening hours: open all day throughout the year.Lengqia Pagoda on Shangfang Mountain
