Lianchi Zen Temple, also known as Lotus Pond and Ancient Lotus Temple, is located at the mouth of Lingtang Bay by Wubao Lake. After Consort Chen died of illness, Emperor Xiaozong, in memory of her, issued an edict to set up a temple and have monks here to chant sutras for Consort Chen to transcend. Later, he ordered the monks to dig a pond and plant lotuses on the east side of the temple, which was then called Lotus Temple. After more than 40 years of continuous construction, the temple is fully equipped with halls, corridors, precious pavilions, lofty towers, and music halls and painted boats, thus becoming one of the famous Buddhist resorts in the south of the Yangtze River. In the eight hundred years of vicissitudes, Lianchi Zen Temple has been repeatedly abandoned and repaired. After 1996, through continuous renovation, it regained its glory and forms a complete ancient lotus scenic area together with Consort Chen’s tomb on the water, Wenchang Pavilion and the Ten-Eyed Long Bridge.
