Liangzhu Museum is located in Liangzhu Town, Yuhang District. A vast array of exquisite jade artifacts dating back four to five thousand years have been unearthed from Liangzhu and its surrounding sites. Not only can visitors witness the true appearance of these artifacts at the Liangzhu Museum, but they can also understand the past and present of Liangzhu culture through various interactive experiences, making it a great place for educational entertainment for children.
Museum Overview: The museum’s architecture itself is a work of art, designed by a British designer, inspired by the concept of ‘a scatter of jade cones on the ground,’ representing a contemporary architectural style. The museum houses three exhibition halls: ‘Discovery and Truth,’ ‘Ancient Liangzhu,’ and ‘Liangzhu Civilization,’ interspersed with three patio-style open-air courtyards, decorated with representative elements of Liangzhu culture. Navigating through this architectural space is an enjoyable experience in itself. Exhibition Highlights: Passing through the front hall ‘Viewing Liangzhu from Hangzhou,’ one arrives at the first exhibition hall ‘Discovery and Truth.’ Here, wax figures recreate the scene of archaeologists discovering Liangzhu, allowing visitors to feel the gradual revelation of Liangzhu culture. After the first exhibition hall, there is an experience classroom featuring archaeological knowledge diagrams, case studies, and interactive games. Exiting the first exhibition hall leads to the Jade Bi Courtyard, where the jade bi-shaped decorations in the water are poetic, and the surrounding benches provide a place for rest. The Jade Bi Courtyard is also one of the museum’s frequently photographed spots. The second exhibition hall uses modern means to reconstruct an ‘Ancient Liangzhu,’ where visitors can experience the details of agriculture, pottery, and jade-making in Liangzhu culture, as well as scenes from the construction of Mo Jiao Mountain in large oil paintings, sand model displays, and ancient city wall cross-sections. A large screen on the wall continuously shows raindrops, accompanied by the sound of thunder, creating a strong sense of presence, as if one has traveled back to the glorious Liangzhu state five thousand years ago. In the corner of the exhibition hall, there are also electronic screens for interactive experiences such as house building and pottery assembly, allowing visitors to feel the interesting side of archaeology. The third exhibition hall is the essence of the museum’s collection, where visitors can see many fine pieces of Liangzhu culture, such as jade cong, jade bi, and jade yue. The appearance of these collections may not be eye-catching, but they are numerous and complete, allowing visitors to gain a general understanding of Liangzhu culture or the ritual system of jade. In addition to appreciating the intricate and complex patterns on the jade, visitors can also learn about the significance and status of different types of jade through the exhibition signs. Outside the museum, Mei Li Zhou is a large park area where visitors often set up tents for picnics on weekends. After visiting the museum, if time permits, one can also stroll around the nearby Liangzhu Cultural Village and enjoy a cost-effective lunch at Liangzhu Food Street. Opening Hours: Open Tuesday-Sunday 09:00-16:30 all year round; Closed all day on Mondays all year round; Open 09:00-16:30 on National Day.Liangzhu Museum
