Lilac Lane is located to the east of Pingjiang Road, starting from Pingjiang Road in the west and extending to Cang Street in the east, with a length of approximately 360 meters and a width ranging from 2 to 4 meters. In 1987, the original cobblestone pavement was replaced with a unique paving stone surface, which is now a rectangular brick-shaped cement paving stone surface.
Lilac Lane was recorded in the ‘Gazetteer of Suzhou Prefecture’ by Lu Xiong during the Ming Dynasty and is also marked on maps such as ‘Map of Suzhou City’, ‘Map of Wu County’, and ‘Map of Suzhou’.
The origin of the name Lilac Lane is steeped in legend, with one of the most common being that the lane was named after the many lilac trees that grew within it.
