Linggu Pagoda is an exquisite octagonal nine-story pagoda constructed from reinforced concrete and Suzhou Jinshan granite. Originally named the Memorial Pagoda for Martyrs, it was built in 1931 as an integral part of the Martyrs’ Cemetery complex. The pagoda was designed by Mao Fei and Dong Dayou, featuring a graceful and elegant shape with a solemn and dignified national style that has received high praise from people of all walks of life.
The inner and outer walls of the pagoda are adorned with bluestone inscriptions. Each of the pagoda’s eight sides has four doors and four inscriptions on each level. On the 12 inscriptions of the second, third, and fourth levels, Mr. Yu Youren’s standard cursive calligraphy of ‘Prime Minister Sun’s Farewell Speech at the Whampoa Military Academy When He Went North’ is engraved, which leaves visitors in awe and admiration.
The 16 inscriptions on the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth levels are engraved with ‘Prime Minister Sun’s Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Whampoa Military Academy,’ inscribed by Mr. Wu Zhihui in small seal script, and all were carved by Tang Zhongfang from Suzhou Wuxian.
