Lingyan Mountain, located on the shores of Lake Taihu, is situated 15 kilometers southwest of Suzhou City with an elevation of 220 meters. It is named for the numerous rocks resembling Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) on the mountain. The Lingyan Mountain Temple is built atop the mountain, facing south, overlooking Lake Taihu, with a spectacular view of the lake and mountain scenery. The central axis features the Maitreya Pavilion, the Mahavira Hall, and the Buddha Recitation Hall, with three main halls. Long corridors run along the east and west sides. The eastern area includes the Duobao Pagoda, Zhiji Hall, Bell Tower, and Xiangguang Hall, while the western area is dominated by gardens. The Duobao Pagoda, a distinctive ancient architectural feature within the temple, stands 34 meters tall, with seven levels and eight sides, in a pavilion style. It was first constructed in the second year of the Tianjian era of the Liang Dynasty (503 AD) and was rebuilt in the seventeenth year of the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1147 AD). The tower seen today is a modern reconstruction based on the original Song Dynasty pagoda. During the Spring and Autumn period, Lingyan Mountain Temple was the site of the Guanwa Palace built by King Fuchai of Wu for Xi Shi. Open all year round from 07:00 to 16:30.
