Liu’s Ladder Number, also known as Chongde Hall, commonly known as the Red House, is the residence of Liu Ansheng, the third son of Liu Yong, the richest among the ‘Four Elephants’ in Nanxun. This is another building in Nanxun that combines Chinese and Western styles at a time when people were keen on adopting Western culture. The entire building is divided into three parts: south, middle, and north. The buildings in the north and south not only incorporate Roman-style architecture, but also have simple Huizhou-style firewalls. Inside the Shikumen, a gorgeous Rococo-style arch top is added without fear of complexity. Liu’s Ladder Number is tall and magnificent, with an imposing manner. Just like other large mansions in Nanxun, this Red House also displays countless vivid brick carvings, wood carvings, and stone carvings. The hall is a Chinese-style hall, exuding extravagance in grandeur. Every detail is meticulously crafted, highlighting the status of the Liu family. In the second hall, a plaque with the words ‘Hold Que He’ is hung to show the owner’s determination to adhere to sincerity and loyalty. The back part of the mansion used to be a tennis court. In a corner of the tennis court, a small dairy farm full of European pastoral charm has been created. Now here is a back garden with rockeries, ponds, corridors, and flowers and trees. If you are a bit tired from strolling in the Red House, you might as well move to the back garden, lean on the beautiful railing, and quietly feel the profound and distant historical atmosphere of this ancient mansion. Open all year round from 08:00 to 16:30.
