The Long Museum West Bund is located at the core of the ‘West Bund Culture Corridor’ along the Xuhui Binjiang in Shanghai, designed and constructed by Chinese architect Liu Yichun. Its unique architectural style has quickly made it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts in Shanghai, attracting countless architectural photographers. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts free niche exhibitions that are highly sought after.
The main structure of the museum features a distinctive ‘umbrella arch’ construction, divided into four levels. The first and second floors serve as exhibition spaces for contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, installation, and new media. The large-scale cantilevered arched surfaces are made from fine-textured fair-faced concrete, visually echoing with the original Bei Piao Wharf Fashion Space ‘Dou Lang’, creating an industrial and raw aesthetic.
The first floor underground is dedicated to the permanent display of ancient Chinese art treasures, with ‘white box’ style rectangular exhibition halls highlighting the historical heritage and profound depth of traditional Chinese art. The Long Museum West Bund is not a traditional closed and introverted museum but an open public space that encourages public participation. The first two floors feature a wide-view riverside restaurant, public landscape courtyards, a concert hall, a café, and an art store, while the first floor underground houses a children’s exhibition hall, a library, an art restoration room, and an art bookstore. The second floor underground has a parking lot with over three hundred parking spaces. All of these elements make art more accessible to the public and closely related to their daily leisure life, which is also the original intention and wish of Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei, the couple who founded the museum.
