Longchi Mountain is located 35 kilometers south of Yixing City, within Mingling Township. It is a forest nature reserve in Jiangsu Province, with a total area of more than 1,800 mu. The forest coverage rate reaches 95%. There are many rare and endangered plants and it is known as the ‘natural plant kingdom’. Longchi Mountain is mainly famous for being ‘rare, strange, ancient, and peculiar’. ‘Rare’ refers to rare tree species and rare plants. ‘Strange’ means there is a pool on the mountain top and there is a dragon in the pool. ‘Ancient’ refers to Chengguang Temple, one of the eight major temples in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. In the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, it ‘opened the ancestral court of Linji and established the Zen temple of Yumen’. ‘Peculiar’ is that the white cloud and rock cliff stretches across the sky, rising thousands of feet. In the morning mist, it is sometimes like a jade belt circling the waist, sometimes like flying catkins spreading everywhere, sometimes brushing against the green rocks, and sometimes disappearing among the layered mountains. The changes are countless. There is also the Xiaoyun Stone that can predict the weather, constituting one of the ten scenic spots of Jingxi, ‘Longchi Xiaoyun’. Longchi Nunnery: A famous scenic spot on the mountain. It was built in the second year of Xianchun in the Song Dynasty (1266). It was originally named Yumen Zen Temple. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was bestowed the name ‘Chengguang Temple’. Chengguang Temple was an important place for spreading the Zen teachings of the Linji Sect in Jiangnan during the Ming Dynasty. The 29th generation of the Linji Sect’s Huanyou Zen Master and his four prominent disciples, Miyun Yuanwu, Tianyin Yuanxiu, and Baopu Yuanlian, all made great contributions to inheriting and promoting the Linji Sect. Longchi Pool: Located on the top of the mountain. Looking into the distance from a high place, you can see the vast Taihu Lake with dots of sails. Watching the sunrise here is as beautiful as on Mount Tai.
