Longchuan, also known as Kengkou, is located 11 kilometers east of Jixi County and is a typical Huizhou-style village with a ship-like shape running north to south. The village is home to the Hu family, with an ancestry traceable to Hu Yan, a former imperial attendant of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and has produced many distinguished figures throughout its history. Although Longchuan is administratively part of Xuancheng, it is farther from Xuancheng and closer to Huangshan City, approximately 70 kilometers away, making it more convenient to start from Huangshan City.

A small stream runs through the village, with the ‘beauty lean’ extending over the stream under the horse-head walls, and stone steps leading into the stream, where village women still wash clothes in the water, and time seems to flow slowly here.

The highlight in the south of the village is the Yishi Shangshu Archway, a genuine antique built in the 41st year of the Jiajing era (AD 1562). Apart from the exquisite stone carvings on the archway, the calligraphy by Wen Zhengming, which reads ‘Yishi Shangshu’ and ‘Yishi Gongbao’, is extremely precious. Across the stream from the Yishi Shangshu Archway is the Duchan Archway, built for Hu Zongming, a deputy imperial censor of the Ming Dynasty.

The highlight in the north of the village, the Hu Family Ancestral Hall, is the essence of the entire village. It was first built during the Song Dynasty and was extensively renovated by Hu Zongxian during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty. The wood carvings on the building are very exquisite. The lotus flowers on the doors and windows of the main hall, the deer on the upper part of the main hall, and the various vases on the doors and windows of the rear part are all unique. Upon close inspection, one can find a door with lotus flowers hiding a crab beneath, symbolizing ‘harmony’.

More interestingly, next to the Hu Family Ancestral Hall, there is a Ding Family Ancestral Hall. It is said that because Longchuan resembles a ship and the character ‘Ding’ resembles an anchor, a ship with an anchor can dock in the harbor, so a Ding surnamed individual was specially invited from another village to settle here. Other attractions in the village include the Lingshan Temple and the Hu Zongxian Memorial Hall, which showcases the life of Hu Zongxian. The village is not large, and one can visit all the main attractions in a single loop.

Longxu Mountain in the northeast of the village can be climbed, and every April, visitors can enjoy the rapeseed flowers in Longchuan. Only 200 meters away from the Longchuan Scenic Area, the Hu Zongxian’s Mansion is not part of the scenic area and requires a separate ticket, but it is well worth a visit. The mansion is extremely grand and vast, with seven generations living under one roof at its peak. The mansion is like a maze, complete with a embroidery tower, theater, private school, and medical clinic. The Hu Zongxian family could attend private schools, watch operas, and see doctors without leaving home in the past.

Tai Chi Lake Village, located northeast of Longchuan, is also a sightseeing spot worth visiting, known for its brick carving gateways. One can take a local minibus from Longchuan to visit. Longchuan is well-developed, with shops and agritourism facilities available. Visitors can taste local delicacies in the village’s small restaurants, such as the Hu Family Pot, which is an iron pot layered with meat, tofu packages, duck meat, and so on, with more layers being better.

The pot is simmered over a low heat until it is tender but not disintegrated. Additionally, bamboo shoots and Jixi ham are excellent, and the wooden mallet candy and baked cakes sold by small vendors can be bought for enjoying while strolling.
For souvenirs, Longchuan bamboo carving is a good choice. There are farmhouses in the village that offer accommodation, but not many tourists choose to stay overnight in the village; returning to stay in Jixi County is also an option.
