Longqiu Zhuang site is located at the northern part of Longqiu Town, Gaoyou City, Jiangsu Province, covering an area of over 40,000 square meters and dating back 7,000 to 5,000 years. Discovered in the 1970s, the site underwent four scientific excavations in the 1990s, with an excavated area of 1,335 square meters, 402 tombs cleaned, and over 2,000 cultural relics unearthed, including production tools, daily necessities, and primitive artworks. Particularly valuable are the large amounts of carbonized rice and ancient pottery shards with writing found in the site’s strata, which are of significant importance for studying the origins of rice cultivation and the emergence of Chinese characters. The excavation has confirmed the existence of a unique, stable, and complete developmental sequence of primitive culture – Longqiu Zhuang culture – in the eastern region of the Jianghuai area between 7,000 and 5,000 years ago. Its discovery strongly proves that the Yangtze River Basin, like the Yellow River Basin, is a cradle of ancient Chinese culture. In 1993, the excavation of this site was recognized as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in China. Open all year round from 08:00 to 18:00.
