Lucun Village is a typical Huizhou-style village inhabited by the Lu family. The highlight of the village is the wooden carving building complex built by Lu Bangxie (known as Lu Million), a wealthy merchant in the Qing Dynasty, for his six wives. The extremely exquisite wooden carvings on the buildings took 20 years to complete. The Huangmei opera ‘Huizhou Woman’ and the TV drama ‘Entering the Blue River Water’ have both been filmed here.
Lucun is also known as Zhishan Village and Lucun Wooden Carving Building Scenic Area. It is said to have been established in the Tang Dynasty. It is located 2 kilometers northwest of Hongcun Village. It is a place that some tourists going to Hongcun will visit on the way. However, there are far fewer tourists in Lucun than in Hongcun. It is especially suitable for photography enthusiasts and those who explore secluded places. You can take a local tricycle to Lucun, but walking is more recommended. Renting a bicycle from a farmhouse in Hongcun and cycling is also a good choice. Along the way, there is idyllic scenery. Especially beautiful when rape blossoms are in full bloom in April. The Yangzhan River passes through Lucun from west to east, and the Lucixi River passes through Lucun from north to south. The two streams converge into the Yecun River. At the water outlet, the stream is clear, ducks are swimming freely, and locals are still washing clothes by the stream as always. Entering the village along the path, under the Huizhou-style buildings with white walls and black tiles, art students from art academies who come here for sketching can always be seen. Zhicheng Hall in the wooden carving building complex has three entrances: the foyer, the main hall, and the back hall. It is the place where Lu Million’s eldest wife, second wife, and parents live together. The carvings in the main hall are very beautiful. There are eight doors and windows on each side. The upper part of the doors and windows is engraved with fine patterns, and the lower part is engraved with auspicious patterns and historical legends. Look carefully for a pair of ‘be promoted immediately upon meeting a monkey’ on the left door and window. The scholar on horseback meets a monkey, with a strong sense of three-dimensionality. Unfortunately, many carved figures in Zhicheng Hall had their heads cut off during the Cultural Revolution. Entering the private school built by Lu Million for his 24 children through the side door of Zhicheng Hall. The wooden carvings here were sealed with yellow mud during the Cultural Revolution, so the carved figures seen now still have heads. Then passing through the kitchen with many stoves and reaching Siji Hall where the fifth concubine lives. The beautiful carvings on the wax gourd beam and the official couch on the right side of the living room are worth noting. Then passing through the high walls and deep alleys and coming to Sicheng Hall where the third and fourth wives live. The Longquan under the small piston on the ground, a pair of stone piers carved in the shape of bundled bamboo, and the wooden bucket for heating are all interesting objects. There is also a glass hall where the sixth concubine lives in the wooden carving building complex. The glass imported from Germany is only 2 millimeters thick and has exquisite craftsmanship. Lucun is not as commercialized as Hongcun, but accommodation and meals are still relatively convenient. There are farmhouses run by locals in the village, and there are also vendors selling snacks such as marinated duck legs at their doorsteps. If you are tired of the crowds and following the herd in Hongcun, you might as well stay in Lucun to enjoy the tranquility.Open all year round. Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:30.
