Luohan Temple

Luohan Temple is located in Luohan Valley, Bingchang Village, nestled in a secluded valley. At the center of the mountain gate sits the Maitreya Buddha (Bag Monk), carved from granite stone, carrying a yellow bag, and greeting visitors with a smiling face. Above the entrance hangs a plaque inscribed with the words ‘Great Joy for All’; the temple gate features a couplet: ‘A smile that never ends through the ages, eyes that see all who come and go.’ Beyond the courtyard lies the Arhat Hall, a Qing Dynasty building that houses granite stone carvings of Sakyamuni and sixteen Qing Dynasty child-faced Arhats. The Arhats are roughly chiseled, with simple and unsophisticated shapes, and their varied expressions give a sense of solemnity and richness, reminiscent of the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty, making this unique Arhat statue rare in China. Next to Luohan Temple, two famous camphor trees stand side by side by the stream, both entwined by an ancient wisteria vine with a diameter of over 60 centimeters, resembling a dragon playing with a pearl, known as the ‘Wisteria and Camphor Intertwined,’ a spectacular sight. The temple is open all year round from 09:00 to 16:00.
