Luzhen is situated within the Ke Yan Scenic Area in Shaoxing, a theme park that recreates the ‘Luzhen’ from Lu Xun’s writings. Here, you will encounter many familiar scenes such as the Lu Family Ancestral Hall, Kuiwen Pavilion, and the Earth and Grain Temple where Ah Q resides, allowing you to reminisce about the plot of the works as you walk, offering a unique experience. Luzhen is roughly divided into three parts by flowing water: the entrance of the scenic area features a tall stone archway inscribed with ‘Luzhen,’ beside which stands a bronze statue of Mr. Lu Xun sitting on a rattan chair, embodying the spirit of ‘frowning coldly at the pointing fingers of thousands, bowing down willingly to be an ox for the children,’ and serving as a symbol of Luzhen.

On the central axis lies the Folk Custom Street and the Double-Sided Stage, with Zhao Mansion, Earth and Grain Temple, and Kuiwen Pavilion on the left, and Jingxiu Temple, Baibian Hall, Lu Mansion (Lu Family Garden), Lu Family Ancestral Hall, Pawnshop, and Qian Mansion (Madman Mansion) on the right. Small bridges connect these parts, and the waterways are occasionally traversed by traditional black awning boats, adding to the charm.

Luzhen is not large, and you can explore it on foot following the signs. The first place you come to is the Folk Custom Street, the bustling area of Luzhen, with many specialty shops along the street selling antique jade, black felt hats, and other trinkets. There are also games with Shaoxing characteristics that tourists can participate in, such as ‘Betting on Cards,’ ‘Ball into Urn,’ and ‘Ring Toss.’ If interested, you can try them out. At the end of the street is the center of Luzhen, the Double-Sided Stage, where visitors can watch local operas and taste yellow wine (refer to the announcement board near the stage for performance times).

Moving left from the stage leads to Ah Q’s dwelling, the Earth and Grain Temple, and further in is the tallest structure in Luzhen, the Kuiwen Pavilion. Climbing up, you can overlook the entire panorama of Luzhen. Crossing the bridge brings you to Qian Mansion, which is arranged according to the plot of ‘A Madman’s Diary,’ creating a distorted environment of ‘cannibalism.’ Especially walking into the wormhole, it feels like entering the internal cavity of an animal, giving an illusion of being devoured by feudal ethics.

Starting from Qian Mansion and heading towards the scenic area entrance, along the way are the pawnshop, the Lu Family Garden from ‘The New Year’s Sacrifice,’ and Jingxiu Temple where Ah Q teased the little nun, among others. After crossing the stone slab bridge in front of Jingxiu Temple, you exit the Luzhen Square. In addition to these buildings, actors dressed in theatrical costumes, playing characters from Lu Xun’s works, are also a spectacle in Luzhen. Ah Q with his slippery tongue makes various funny faces, and Xianglin’s Wife wanders around the streets with a begging basket and bamboo pole… making people feel as if they have truly entered the stories of Lu Xun. When there are many tourists, they play their roles and recite classic lines to amuse visitors, causing tourists to take out their cameras to take photos.
