Luzhen is located within the Ke Yan Scenic Area in Shaoxing and is a theme park that recreates the ‘Luzhen’ described by Lu Xun. Here, you will encounter many familiar scenes: Lu’s Ancestral Hall, Kuiwen Pavilion, and the Earth and Grain Temple where Ah Q dwells, among others. It allows visitors to reminisce about the stories as they walk through, offering a unique experience.
Luzhen is roughly divided into three parts by flowing water. At the entrance of the scenic area, a tall stone archway welcomes visitors, inscribed with the word ‘Luzhen’. Beside it stands a bronze statue of Mr. Lu Xun sitting on a rattan chair, embodying the spirit of ‘frowning at thousands of critics, bowing to be a cow for the children’, which is also a symbol of Luzhen.
On the central axis lies the Folk Custom Street and the Double-Sided Stage. To the left are Zhao’s Mansion, Earth and Grain Temple, and Kuiwen Pavilion, while to the right, there are the Silent Cultivation Temple, Hundred Plaque Pavilion, Lu’s Mansion (Lu’s Garden), Lu’s Ancestral Hall, Pawnshop, and Qian’s Mansion (Madman’s Mansion), connected by small bridges. The waterways occasionally see the passing of traditional black awning boats, adding to the charm.
Luzhen is not large, and it can be easily explored on foot following the signs. The first stop is the Folk Custom Street, a bustling area of Luzhen with many specialty shops selling antique jade, black felt hats, and other trinkets. There are also games such as ‘Betting on Cards’, ‘Throwing Balls into a Vase’, and ‘Ring Toss’, which are characteristic of Shaoxing and can be enjoyed by tourists.
At the end of the Custom Street is the heart of Luzhen, the Double-Sided Stage, where visitors can watch local operas and taste Shaoxing wine (refer to the announcement board near the stage for performance times). To the left of the stage is Ah Q’s dwelling, the Earth and Grain Temple, and further in is the tallest building in Luzhen, Kuiwen Pavilion. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Luzhen.
