Mao Dun’s Former Residence is one of the famous attractions in Dongzha, located at the corner where Guanqian Street intersects with Xinhua Road. There are two places in China that are known as Mao Dun’s former residences, one in Beijing and the other in Wuzhen. The residence in Beijing is where Mao Dun lived after 1972, while the one in Wuzhen is the place of his birth and upbringing. The Wuzhen residence is a common wooden structure in the Jiangnan area, consisting of two buildings, with the front one housing three rooms used as Mao Dun’s bedroom, study, and reception room. Next to the study, there is a palm tree planted by Mr. Mao Dun himself. Adjacent to the house is a small courtyard garden, where palm trees, azaleas, holly, cypress, and fruit vines are planted. The rear building is a two-story structure, used as a kitchen, dining room, and living room. Nowadays, visitors can experience the living scenes of that time here. While Mao Dun’s Former Residence does not have the grandeur of a wealthy family, every room, from the living room to the bedroom and study, exudes the elegance of the Shen family’s scholarly household. If you are interested in Mao Dun himself and his literary achievements, do not miss this place. It is open from 08:00 to 17:00 all year round; from 08:00 to 17:30 all year round.
