Marco Polo (1254 – 1324), an Italian, was an international traveler. He was treated with courtesy and重用 by Kublai Khan, Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty. He represented the Yuan government to出使 Persia, India, Annam and other places successively. He also served as an official in Yangzhou for three years (1282 – 1284). The Marco Polo Memorial Hall is located in Tianning Temple. Tianning Temple is a famous Buddhist temple in Yangzhou early on. In its heyday, it was not only the palace where Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong stayed during their southern tours, but also the place where Cao Yin was ordered to set up a bureau to publish the Complete Tang Poems and compile the Peiwen Yunfu. It is closely related to the family affairs of Cao Xueqin and has become an important relic attracting the attention of Redologists at home and abroad. Now, there is a Marco Polo Hall to commemorate this friendly envoy from Venice in ancient times. The exhibition area of the memorial hall is more than 500 square meters. Closely following the theme of ‘Marco Polo coming to Yangzhou, China’, it is divided into five units: ‘Traveling to the East’, ‘Seeing in China’, ‘Serving as an Official in Yangzhou’, ‘Extraordinary Book’, and ‘The World after Death’. By using display means such as modeling and landscaping and multimedia, it intuitively reproduces the content described in The Travels of Marco Polo and comprehensively and systematically presents Marco Polo’s legendary experience and far-reaching influence.
