Mengfu and Mengmiao Scenic Area

Zoucheng City is the hometown of Mencius, a great ancient Chinese thinker and educator. The residence of the direct descendants of the Meng family – Mengfu, and the place where Mencius has been worshipped in past dynasties – Mengmiao are located in the southern part of Zoucheng urban area. Mengmiao, also known as Yasheng Temple, is an ancient architectural complex with five courtyards. Centered on the Yasheng Hall, with north and south as the central axis, the left and right buildings are arranged symmetrically.

There are 64 halls in total. The Yasheng Hall is the main building in the temple. The buildings in the temple have been rebuilt many times in past dynasties. The existing buildings were rebuilt during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and are representative ancient architectural works from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties in China. Mengfu is located on the west side of Mengmiao. It was built in the late Northern Song Dynasty.

Its architectural layout is rigorous and regular. It is composed of seven courtyards from front to back. The front part of Mengfu is the lobby yamen, the middle part is the inner residence, and the back is the garden. The west road is the ‘Three Moves Academy’, the family school of the Meng family. There are 148 buildings such as towers, halls, pavilions and attics in the mansion. It is an existing ancient architectural complex in China with a large scale and relatively complete preservation that combines yamen and residence.

In addition, there is also Menglin, also known as Yasheng Forest. It is the place where Mencius rests. It is located 13 kilometers northeast of Zoucheng urban area. Mengzi Forest is built against the mountain and has a magnificent momentum. There are more than 10,000 ancient trees in it. It is one of the existing family cemeteries in China with a large scale and a long history.
