Mi Lou, located by the Zhenfeng Bridge, was originally known as De Ji Hotel. In the early 1920s, founders of the Southern Society, including Liu Yazi, Chen Qubing, Wang Daju, and Fei Gongzhi, used to gather here to compose poetry. They wrote verses such as ‘Beside Zhenfeng Bridge, three rooms stand, A corner tower where the night never ends, Wine does not intoxicate, yet men are drunk on their own, With scenery pleasing and the charm of the place.

‘ Built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, Mi Lou still retains its ancient appearance, featuring a wooden structure. The first floor mainly displays photos and manuscripts of Southern Society members, while the second floor houses wax figures and biographies of these members, with windows offering a view of the outside scenery. It is said that the tavern’s wine maiden, Ah Jin, and her mother were as beautiful as flowers.

To escape the white terror, the Southern Society members asked the hostess to change the name of the tavern to Mi Lou and wrote poems praising the beauty of the mother and daughter, leading people to believe that they were the ones who attracted the gathering of talented scholars. Later, over a hundred poems by the Southern Society members were compiled into ‘Mi Lou Collection.’ The attraction is open all year round from 8:00 to 16:30, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.

A must-see tip before visiting Mi Lou is to learn about its history, otherwise, you might not understand the ‘mystery’ behind Mi Lou.
