The Ming Residence, situated in Gongshu District of Hangzhou City, is a historic complex consisting of two distinct residences: the Mao Residence on the south side, which is under in-situ protection, and the Chen Residence on the north side, which was moved and protected from Xiawan Alley. Spanning a total area of 2.8 mu, these residences offer a glimpse into the architectural styles of the Ming Dynasty.
The Mao Residence is notable for its two courtyards, with the second courtyard being a late Ming Dynasty building. This five-bay hall building features wing rooms on both the north and south sides, showcasing the architectural prowess of the period. The Chen Residence, on the other hand, is composed of a brick-carved gate tower and the original second courtyard building, dating back to the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.
Both Ming Dynasty dwellings exhibit the characteristics of their times and regions through their building components and forms. Notably, the Mao Residence’s gold pillars are prism-shaped, preserving the old system of the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The maple arches and dougong piers are particularly striking, embodying the grandeur of the Ming Dynasty.
As one of the few surviving Ming Dynasty residential buildings in Hangzhou, the Ming Residence serves as a valuable resource for studying the style and development changes of residential architecture in the Hangzhou area. Its preservation provides a tangible connection to the past, allowing for a deeper understanding of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
