Minghe Ancient Town is located in the southeast of Cixi, Ningbo, Zhejiang, 50 kilometers east of Ningbo, and adjacent to the National Highway 329. It was built during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty and has a history of over 1200 years. It is one of the ancient towns in the Sanbei region and the only remaining ancient town in Cixi City with a typical Jiangnan ancient town style, earning the reputation of ‘Minghe scenery rivals Gusu’.

Minghe Ancient Town is built along Baiyang Lake and is close to the Wulei Mountain Scenic Area, making it a true ancient town with mountains and waters. The river in the ancient town flows from west to east, with seven ancient bridges from the Ming Dynasty spanning the river. Along the river, there are Ming and Qing Dynasty residences with the characteristics of Jiangnan water towns. Many of these residences are mansions built by the Ye family of Minghe after they prospered in the national medicine industry.

The Yanchang Horse Racing Building is a very distinctive ancient building among the quadrangle buildings in southern China. The Shen Family’s former residence still preserves the reports of their descendants’ success in the imperial examinations. The lingering scholarly atmosphere on the report forms is a testament to the accumulation and continuation of the ancient town’s culture.

The Zhejiang Dong First Ancient Temple, Wulei Temple, which has a history of over 1700 years, and the Jinshan Temple, founded during the Liang Datong period, are both close to this town. With the morning and evening bells and the melodious chanting from the temples, the ancient town seems to have added a touch of extraordinary and mysterious color.
