The Minhang Museum has a total construction area of 4,200 square meters and an exhibition area of 1,920 square meters. It has two basic exhibition halls, namely the ‘Maqiao Ancient Culture Exhibition Hall’ and the ‘Chinese National Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall’. The exhibition hall area of the Maqiao Ancient Culture Exhibition Hall is 430 square meters. More than 200 artifacts unearthed from the Maqiao site are on display, which are relics from the Liangzhu culture, Maqiao culture and the periods from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States to the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties. They are displayed in novel forms and accompanied by three-dimensional models, touch-screen computers, sound, light, film and television and other multimedia to vividly reproduce the scene of Maqiao ancestors improving living conditions with wisdom and diligence thousands of years ago, and vividly interpret and deduce the primitive civilization on this ancient coastline in the central part of Shanghai. The exhibition hall area of the Chinese National Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall is 640 square meters. More than 100 kinds and more than 300 ancient and modern musical instruments are on display, which are divided into four major series: ‘aerophones, chordophones, idiophones, and membranophones’, fully reflecting the classification and development of Chinese national musical instruments. The museum also displays musical instruments donated by many famous musicians in modern and contemporary China and precious documentary historical materials. By using modern display methods such as phantom imaging and models of the sound generation principles of musical instruments, ancient and modern musical instruments blend and set off each other, vividly reproducing the elegance of Chinese national musical instruments.
