At the end of the Qin Dynasty, Liu Bang was assigned by the county magistrate to escort a group of laborers to Lishan to build the mausoleum for Qin Shi Huang. When they reached Mangdang Mountain in Yongcheng, Shangqiu, most of the people had escaped. Liu Bang just hurried on his way by moonlight. When he walked into the wild path in front of Mangdang Mountain, he suddenly encountered a large white snake lying across the road, causing everyone to be in panic. Liu Bang drew his sword and stepped forward, cutting the snake into two sections. After the white snake was cut, blood flowed all over the ground. Then a patch of red grass grew at the place where the snake was cut. To this day, after more than two thousand years, the red grass here still remains unchanged in color. After Liu Bang cut the snake, he immediately raised the flag and rebelled. He recruited soldiers and bought horses in the Mangdang Mountain area. After several years of battles, he finally established the Western Han Dynasty in 202 BC. During the reign of Emperor Wen of Han, in memory of Liu Bang’s rebellion after slaying the snake here, a monument and a temple were built at the place where the snake was cut. After thousands of years, the monument and temple have been damaged and rebuilt several times. Apart from the historical legends about it, the attraction of the Monument of Liu Bang Slaying the Snake also lies in the magical phantom presented by the monument body. Whenever night falls, when the monument body is illuminated by light, a warrior in silver armor will emerge vividly on the monument body, just like Liu Bang reappearing in those days, which is astonishing and a wonder in the world.
