Located in the southeast of Nanjing, along the Qinhuai River, the Morning Light 1865 Technology and Creative Industry Park is part of the Morning Light Group. Its predecessor was the Jinling Machinery Manufacturing Bureau during the Qing Dynasty’s Self-Strengthening Movement, earning the reputation of being the ‘cradle of national military industry’ in China. In 1865, following the failure of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom peasant uprising, Li Hongzhang, the Governor-General of the Two Rivers, relocated to Jinling. To strengthen the nation’s power and military capabilities, he invested a substantial amount of silver to move the Suzhou Foreign Cannon Bureau to Nanjing. He demolished houses and enclosed land in the area of the city’s broom alley to construct dozens of factory buildings, including the main machine factory, left and right factories, copper foundry, and carpentry factory, thus establishing the Jinling Machinery Manufacturing Bureau. All structures here bear the strong characteristics of an ‘arsenal’. The park is open all year round with full-day accessibility.
