Mudu Shantang Street is the main street of Mudu Ancient Town. It starts from Zhongshi Street in the east and connects Lingyan Mountain in the west. The main scenic spots and delicious food in the ancient town are concentrated here. It is said that in the Spring and Autumn Period, King Fuchai of Wu built the Guanwa Palace on the top of Lingyan Mountain to please Xi Shi. Labor and materials gathered here, so many people settled in Shantang and gradually developed a town.
Although Mudu Shantang Street has a similar layout to Shantang Street in Suzhou City, both are ancient houses, old streets, and small bridges and flowing water. However, the formation time of the former is much earlier than that of the latter. The tourist center (ticket office) is at the western end of Shantang Street. The Yan Family Garden, Hongyin Mountain Villa, Gusu Twelve Beauties Cultural Park (free), Ancient Pine Garden, and No. 2 Scholar’s Mansion are the main scenic spots along the street from west to east. The nanmu hall Shangxian Hall in the Yan Family Garden is very magnificent; there is a big stage in the Hongyin Mountain Villa; the carved patterns on the building hall of the Ancient Pine Garden are very beautiful, and there is also a Ming Dynasty podocarpus in the garden; the No. 2 Scholar’s Mansion is famous for its exquisite brick carvings, wood carvings, and stone carvings. The Xiangxi River along Mudu Shantang Street and the Xujiang River on the south side meet under the ancient bridge Xieqiao in the east. It is said that the Xiangxi River is named because Xi Shi took a bath with spices in the Guanwa Palace, and the water flowed into the river, making the whole river fragrant. The Xujiang River is an artificial canal excavated by Wu Zixu and his followers. You can take a cruise on the river and enjoy the scenery on both sides. The cruise ship terminal is not far from the tourist center at the western end of Shantang Street. The fare is 10 yuan, and the ship departs when there are three people. Other scenic spots on Shantang Street include Mingyue Temple, etc. The Ming and Qing Ancient Porcelain Museum is on the other side of the river. The delicious food on Shantang Street includes Qianshengyuan. The signature jujube paste sesame cake is even better than that of another famous Suzhou store, Caizhizhai. If you keep walking east along Shantang Street to Zhongshi Street, the Shijia Restaurant is also very famous. The signature dish, the Bafei soup, is made by simmering chicken soup with fish liver. The fish liver is tender and the soup is extremely delicious. The specific opening hours and business status are subject to the opening situation on the day.Mudu Shantang Street
