Nanchan Temple is not large but has a prosperous incense. The historical block built along the ancient canal of Wuxi is connected to the temple. The Miaoguang Tower in the temple is very conspicuous among the buildings with pink walls and black tiles and is a landmark in this area.

After worshipping Buddha in the temple, you can go shopping and eat delicious food nearby. The night view here is also worth seeing.

Nanchan Temple was first built in the early years of Taiqing during the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang in the Southern Dynasties (547 AD). It has been renovated and abandoned many times in later generations. The temple we see now was rebuilt in the 1980s and 1990s.

The main gate of the temple is at the south end. There are only a few buildings such as the Mahavira Hall on the north-south central axis.

The Miaoguang Tower on the east side is seven stories high. Looking at the roofs of the antique buildings connected together from the tower and looking at the Nanchan Temple Wharf by the ancient canal in the south, there is vaguely a feeling that an ancient canal painting unfolds in front of you.

There is a vegetarian restaurant on the east side of the main gate of the temple where you can have vegetarian food and order takeout.

A business district has formed around Nanchan Temple. There are snacks, antique markets, flower and bird markets, and bookstores. You can go shopping and find some small gadgets.

The snacks are similar to most tourist attractions in Wuxi. There are stinky tofu, Wuxi spareribs, and grilled chicken wings. Outside Nanchan Temple is Nanchan Temple Pedestrian Street. Walking a few steps east, next to the temple is a Muguiying Food place. Some tourists call it a place where ‘you must go and eat after visiting Nanchan Temple’. It mainly sells pastries and snacks. Yulan cakes, green rice balls, small steamed buns, and zongzi are all good.

When night falls, the old houses in Nanchan Temple and by the ancient canal light up. The strings of red lanterns hanging on the old houses are reflected in the canal. The beautiful night view attracts many photographers.

It is recommended to take a walk along the canal or take a cruise from Nanchan Temple Wharf to visit the ancient canal scenic area of Qingming Bridge.

The canal water bus (i.e., cruise ship) sails southeast from Nanchan Temple Wharf to Shuixian Taoist Temple and then returns to Nanchan Temple Wharf.

Sitting on the cruise ship, from Nanchan Temple Wharf to Kuatang Bridge, you will see fashionable old buildings and Yangchun Lane commercial area. From Kuatang Bridge to Qingming Bridge is the essence part, known as ‘Jiangnan water alley, the only place on the canal’. The historical block transformed from old houses, where you can find many waterside beauty benches and small terraces.

It is recommended to get off at Shuixian Taoist Temple by cruise ship and then walk back to Nanchan Temple Wharf. If you are in the mood, you can also turn to Yangchun Lane for a stroll.

Opening hours: Open all year round from 07:00 to 16:30.

Must-see tips: At the entrance of Nanchan Temple, you may encounter people who insist on fortune-telling for you. Just politely refuse.
