Nanhau Street, originally named Nanhai Street, is located between Changmen and Xumen outside Suzhou City. It is named after the moat south of Changmen called Nanhai. Later, ‘hai’ was wrongly written as ‘hao’. In the Republic of China’s ‘Gazetteer of Wu County’, it was called Nanhai Avenue. ‘Suzhou City Map’, ‘Wu County Map’, and ‘Suzhou Map’ all marked Nanhai Street. Du Mu and Yang Xunji, famous literary figures in the Ming Dynasty in Suzhou, once lived on Nanhai Street. During the Lantern Festival, the area around Changmen is extremely popular, and Nanhai Street is also a place decorated with lanterns and colored streamers.
