Nanhe Xia District, located in the south of Yangzhou’s old town and along the ancient Grand Canal, features old streets and ancient alleys such as Nanhe Xia and Dingjia Bay. With He Garden as the leading attraction, this area is home to numerous guild halls and traditional Yangzhou residences. The district is roughly bounded by Guangling Road to the north, the middle section of Nanhe Xia to the south, Xu Ningmen Road to the east, and Fojiadian and Dujiang Road to the west.
Deep in the narrow lanes and courtyards, remnants of ancient residences are ubiquitous, with old wells, brick-carved gateways, and ancient trees visible everywhere. In addition to the famous salt merchant’s residence He Garden, Nanhe Xia District also scatters many well-preserved salt merchant residences and guild halls such as Hunan Guild (Di Garden), Ping Garden, Xiao Pang Valley, Jia’s Courtyard, Er Fen Ming Yue Building, Xu Yunfu Residence (Zun De Hall), Liao Ke Ting’s Salt Merchant Former Residence, Lingnan Guild, and Si An Public Office. Moreover, the district includes ancient alleys like Nanhe Xia, Dashu Alley, Dingjia Bay, Wucheng Alley, Jushi Alley, Yinshi Street, and Xincang Alley, crisscrossing the area with numerous old wells and residences. Most of the walls, brick-carved gateways, and other structures have been preserved in their original form, maintaining the district’s historical appearance.
