The South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall was established in October 1959. It is the publicity, protection and management institution of the site of the First National Congress on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing. It is a modern commemorative thematic memorial hall and is under the jurisdiction of the Nanhu Scenic Area Management Committee of Jiaxing City. At the beginning of its establishment, the museum was located on the island in the center of Nanhu Lake, and ancient buildings on the island were borrowed as venues for holding exhibitions.
In June 1991, the South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall building donated by the people of Jiaxing was completed and opened to the public on the east bank of Nanhu Lake. The expansion project of the South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall started construction on March 5, 2007. The new museum is located on the south bank of Nanhu Lake. The land area and the total building area are 10 times that of the original museum building. It is composed of three buildings of ‘one main and two auxiliary’ and has an ‘I’ -shaped plane shape. The architectural style is solemn. The new museum was officially opened to the public in 2011.
