Nanhu is named after its location south of Jiaxing City. It is known as one of the ‘Three Famous Lakes in Jiangnan’ together with Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing and West Lake in Hangzhou. Here, there is not only the beautiful scenery of Jiangnan but also an important revolutionary memorial site in modern Chinese history. The cruise ships depart about every 20 minutes and take you around the lake in the order of scenic spots. At each scenic spot, passengers disembark and then wait for the next ship to go to the next scenic spot. There are three main docks along the shore. Usually, people board the ship at Huijing Garden on the east side of Nanhu. Except for the Mid-Lake Island which is in the center of Nanhu and can only be reached by boat, the other two are on the shore. You can take a full circle back to the departure point or end your tour at one of the places. The first stop of the cruise ship is the Mid-Lake Island in the center of Nanhu. The Misty Rain Tower on the island is said to be the place where Emperor Qianlong stopped many times when he toured Jiangnan, thus becoming very famous. Today’s Misty Rain Tower is no longer an antique, but the imitation ancient architecture is very beautiful under the surrounding gardens and is still a building worth seeing on the island. Especially when looking from afar upstairs. The famous site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China – the Red Boat on Nanhu is on the lake in front of the Misty Rain Tower. Many tourists come here just to see with their own eyes the birthplace of the revolution back then. However, the red boat seen today is a later imitation, and the interior decoration is very new. Boarding the ship requires an additional fee. You can only look inside and taking pictures is not allowed. Generally, it’s good to just take pictures of the exterior on the shore. In addition, on the Mid-Lake Island, there are also Emperor Qianlong’s Stele Pavilion, Qinghui Hall, and several small pavilions that you can visit casually. In the next tour, the Cangsheng Temple commemorating Cang Jie and the Stele Garden of Written Characters on Xiaoxiying Island in the north, the Canal Tower and the Wuxiang Temple commemorating Wu Zixu in the west, etc. are relatively plain. Walking around and looking at the scenery is still quite good. Climbing the high tower, you can overlook the green trees, weeping willows, pavilions and bridges in Nanhu. Sometimes there are trains passing by on the Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway on one side. In fact, just walking casually around Nanhu is also a good choice. In recent years, Nanhu has been maintained more and more exquisitely. Many small gardens have been newly built along the lake. For example, the four small parks themed on spring, summer, autumn and winter on the east side and the Shaoyuan Garden on the south side are urban green spaces that locals also like very much. If you want to experience the red history, the Nanhu Revolutionary Memorial Hall and the Hero Monument near Shaoyuan are good choices. In addition, the misty rain over Nanhu is one of the ‘Eight Scenes of Jiahe’. When it is drizzling, the lake is surrounded by mist, and the scenery is charming.
