Located at No. 19 Nanjing Alley, Bei Guan, Bozhou City, Nanjing Alley Bank is the former site of a private financial institution that operated with currency. In May 1998, it was declared a key cultural relics protection unit by the People’s Government of Anhui Province. Bozhou has been a major commercial port since ancient times, and the financial industry has flourished since the Ming and Qing dynasties. With the development of the economy and foreign trade, merchants gathered and chambers of commerce stood in abundance. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, there were 33 large and small banks in the city. Nanjing Alley Bank was built during the reign of Emperor Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty, and it was a branch of the ‘Rishengchang’ ticket number in Pingyao. Its business scope mainly included: deposits, loans, currency exchange, issuance and exchange of banknotes, and silver tickets. With the development of urban construction, most of the original bank sites in Bozhou city were demolished and rebuilt, with only Nanjing Alley Bank being relatively well-preserved and open to the public as a bank museum. Nanjing Alley Bank is a three-room wide, three-depth courtyard with more than 30 buildings including a porch, main hall, back hall, counter room, accounting room, manager’s room, and kitchen, featuring a combination of Chinese and Western architectural styles, strict layout, and complete preservation. It now houses a special exhibition on the rise, development, and demise of Bozhou banks, which is of great value for studying the history of modern banks and commercial architecture. Opening hours are from May 1st to October 31st, 08:30 to 18:00, and from November 1st to April 30th, 09:00 to 17:30.
