Nanjing Christian Church on Mochou Road

Situated facing west, the Nanjing Christian Church on Mochou Road is a quintessential example of English architecture, with a total construction area of 1800 square meters. Its design and structure are meticulously detailed, particularly the towering bell tower entrance and the pointed arches of the side windows which are quite striking. The entire building’s layout resembles a cross, constructed with a brick-wood structure, a dome top, and a roof covered with square cement flat tiles. The exterior walls are made of clear bricks with clear water joints.

The main facade’s curtain wall is composed of Gothic pointed arch doors and slender pointed arch windows, forming an integrated decorative surface. It is adorned with white cement relief and white terrazzo creating a large pointed arch, reaching a height of 17 meters. The top of the arch features a pattern combining stars and a cross. Inside the church, there are eight person-shaped columns, and the wooden structural roof truss gradually projects and rises from both sides towards the center, with each level having a circular support and a hanging decoration below. This structural method is known as the ‘hammer roof truss,’ which belongs to the architectural style of the Tudor dynasty in 16th-century England.
