The existing Nanjing City Wall was constructed during the early Ming Dynasty (1366-1386), following the advice of Zhu Sheng to Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang on ‘building high walls’. It stretches 10 kilometers from north to south, 5.67 kilometers from east to west, with a circumference of 33.676 kilometers. Unlike other city walls in China, the Nanjing City Wall is characterized by its irregular shape.
Originally, the Ming Dynasty Nanjing had 13 city gates; only a few remain today. Among them, the Zhonghua Gate is a significant fortress with three stories and 27 soldier-hiding caves, capable of sheltering more than three thousand soldiers. It was used for defense against invading enemies during the Ming Dynasty.
Opening hours are 08:30-17:00 all year round. The business hours for Zhonghua Gate Fortress are 08:30-17:00, and for Nanjing Taicheng, they are 08:30-17:30.
