Yandi Nunnery existed before the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom occupied Nanjing. After the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom occupied Nanjing, it destroyed almost all Buddhist temples in Nanjing. Yandi Nunnery was not spared. It was not until the fall of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom regime that local people rebuilt it during the Tongzhi period.
