The precursor of Nanjing University dates back to the Taixue of Nanjing during the Three Kingdoms period, while its modern history began with the Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902. The university currently has two campuses, Gulou and Xianlin, with the Gulou campus being the main attraction for visitors due to its concentration of ancient buildings. Strolling through the lush green campus, one can reminisce about campus life.
The North Building at the Gulou campus is a landmark of Nanjing University, characterized by its Western-style brick and wood structure. The late Mr. Yu Guangzhong once lamented that ‘ivy has climbed all over the North Building,’ a sight that remains true today, with the red star on the roof standing out prominently.
In front of the old library, there are two simple and ancient stone tablets, ‘Two Rivers Normal School’ and ‘Jinling University,’ which record the history of Nanjing University. For those interested in history, a visit to the adjacent University History Museum is recommended.
Additionally, the Zhongshan Building is worth a visit. In the southeast corner of the campus lies the former residence of John Rabe, where the famous ‘Rabe Diaries’ were written. The ancient buildings on campus, from the eaves to the wall carvings, are worth savoring and are ideal for photography. When osmanthus flowers bloom, the fragrance permeates the entire campus, making a stroll even more pleasant.
The campus is open all year round from 08:30 to 19:00. Visitors are required to book in advance for a campus tour, and the specific operating status is subject to the day’s opening conditions. Must-see tips:
